President’s Message

Hi Everyone. Well it’s hot now but I hope by the time you read this it will be a little cooler and hunting season will be just around the corner.

I would like to start by thanking every member of TSCON and all the gun owners in other ridings who helped elect Conservative MPs. Even if your candidate was not elected it was not a wasted effort as it makes the party aware that gun owners can be counted on to support their nominees.

On a more sombre note, another mass killing has occurred, this time in Norway. My heart goes out to all the families who lost loved ones. Was it senseless. Yes. Could it have been prevented? Maybe. It took the police more than an hour to get to the scene of the crime. Why? They weren’t prepared and apparently never considered that something like this could happen in a ‘peaceful’ country like Norway.

It also begs the question, if anybody on that island had been trained and armed would the outcome have been different? From all accounts it appears the answer would be “Yes”. Because there was absolutely no armed resistance the killer was free to slaughter at will.

Gun-free zones like youth camps and schools are really just free-fire zones for any crackpot who chooses to turn them into one knowing they have nothing to fear. The police cannot be everywhere at all times, leaving such locations vulnerable.

No doubt the anti-gun factions will use this tragedy as an excuse to push for tighter regulations but their arguments are particularly weak this time. The shooter had followed Norway’s restrictive firearm laws, had no criminal record and selected a very soft target so it is unlikely any amount amount of legislation would have deterred him. In the end it is ultimately each individual who must provide for their own security and it is the responsibility of the government to make sure we are provided with the legal means to do so within the law.

Enjoy the rest of the summer, see you at the September gun show and remember that we’ve got a McGuinty to get rid of in October so..... PLEASE GET OUT AND VOTE!!!

Bodo Eichhorn

After labouring since Nov. 1994, on May 2, 2011 our efforts came to fruition with the election of a majority Conservative government. It was particularly gratifying to see the gun-hating Liberals decimated to 3rd party status, particularly since Michael Ignatieff (anybody remember him?) continued to tout the benefits of their gun control scheme even as his party imploded around him. Their demise was made even sweeter by the defeat of several MPs who flip-flopped on Bill C-391, notably Larry Bagnell in the Yukon and Anthony Rota in North Bay who lost by 18 votes (ha, ha!). Perhaps the sweetest defeat was that of Liberal MP Mark Holland from Ajax-Pickering, the obnoxious, self-serving, stridently anti-gun jerk who engineered the defeat of C-391. Gun owners were front and centre in the effort to unseat him and their work paid off in spades, sending him crying (literally) to the unemployment line.

What this victory means is that now the Conservatives have NO excuses fordragging their feet on legislation to get rid of some, if not all of the Firearms Act and replace it with legislation that actually works. We will be watching them carefully over the next several months to see if they are serious or just blowing smoke.

One Sour Note...

Locally, pro-gun Conservative MPs rolled up huge victories with Dean Allison, Rick Dykstra and Rob Nicholson all won their seats with over 50% of the vote.

The only low point in the evening came when Welland Conservative candidate Leanna Villella, lost a 1000 vote squeaker to C-391 flip-flopping sellout Malcolm Allen of the NDP.

To say we were disappointed is a gross understatement. Leanna was 100% on our side from the beginning and her narrow loss to a do-nothing, anti-gun clown like Malcolm Allen was unfortunate.

To be very blunt (and with our apologies to the few Wellanders who did help out) we’re extremely disappointed and frustrated by the general lack of support she received from Welland riding gun owners. An April fundraiser TSCON sponsored for her was successful only because several non-Welland clubs likePinecrest Pistol Club, Maple Leaf Gun Club and Crowland Sports Club got their members to attend while Welland riding gun owners were conspicuous by their absence.

TSCON has over 200 members in the Welland riding but it appears very few of them bothered to assist with Leanna’s campaign. Had even half those members spent a few hours each helping her out she would have easily been elected. But now, instead of a friendly ear who would have taken your concerns to Ottawa, for the next four years Welland gun owners will have to put up with an MP who doesn’t care about your guns and will ignore you when you complain.

It all boils down to this - talk is cheap. If you really care about your firearm rights you either PUT UP OR SHUT UP. If you can’t be bothered to even take a lawn sign, deliver a few flyers or kick in a few dollars to the campaign of someone who is supporting you then you have no right to complain when the government tramples your firearm activities.

We sincerely hope Leanna will come back for another run in 2015. Meanwhile there is an anti-gun provincial Liberal government that needs to be defeated in October. We hope that this time Welland gun owners will muster a little more energy to see that it happens. Remember, the world is run by those who show up.

Licence Fee Waiver Extended

In the last newsletter we noted that before Parliament dissolved prior to the May election the Conservatives extended the amnesty on unregistered long guns for two more years to May 16, 2013 with the same conditions as previous amnesties (details in the April newsletter). However, at that time they DID NOT extend the fee waiver for licence renewals. Fortunately, at the 11th hour the fee waiver was also included and is in place until May 16, 2012.

Dave Rempel

The world lost one of its genuinely nice guys when TSCON Executive Director Dave Rempel passed away in June. Dave was one of those rare individuals who never complained, always seemed to be in a good mood and was there to help out when things needed to be done. Even as he coped with some serious health problems in the past couple of years he never seemed to lose his upbeat demeanor. His smiling face is going to be sorely missed at TSCON Executive meetings. Our sincere condolences go out to his wife Ann and the rest of his family.

And More...

On a further unhappy note, TSCON recently lost three members with the passing of Herb Cole, Murray Gayder and Ralph Metzke.

Herb was a hard working pro gun activist during the "first round" of gun control in the 70's with the supposed "reasonable" laws that started Canada on the road to the mess we are in now and while it was unfashionable to speak out in those days, Herb did.

Murray and Ralph were both active gun owners and long time TSCON members and both left us far too early, Murray at 58 and Ralph at 46. TSCON is diminished by the loss of these three fine gentlemen and our sympathies go out to their families and loved ones.

We Missed You At the April Gun Show

I know that we must have missed some of the members and friends from the St. Catharines Imperial Veterans Ass’n. & the Korean War Veterans Ass’n. (15 George in St. Catharines) at the April show but it was not for lack of trying. TSCON runs 4 very successful gun shows a year and we try to give our members, friends and interested parties advance notice of upcoming shows. We post our flyers everywhere.

We’ve missed posting our upcoming gun show flyers there in the past but TSCON was determined to include the Imperial & Korean Vets Ass’ns too!

I asked to speak to the manager and after introducing myself and showing her our gun show flyer I respectfully asked to post it for members, friends and guests to see.

You cannot believe my astonishment when she said "No." I mentioned to her that we likely had TSCON members in the Imperial & Korean Vets Ass’ns. and was sure they would like to be informed of the upcoming show. She shook her head and again said "No." When I asked her why not, she said, "What? Do you want to argue with me?" I didn't want to argue so I left. Unbelievable, right?

The sign on the St. Catharines Imperial & Korean Vets Ass’n. building says "All Welcome." We suggest they change it to "All Welcome Except Gun Owners."

Bruce Montague Update

Bruce’s next court appearance is in November when he will try to get the court to order the release of all the goods which were seized when he was originally arrested. Ironically, anything he gets back may then have to be turned over to the Ontario government because, incredibly, it has put a lien against all his property, and that issue will be dealt with in a separate hearing in December.

Hopefully the McGuinty Gestapo thugs will have been defeated by then and replaced with a government which won’t waste any more taxpayer money on this witch hunt.

This long battle has depleted Bruce’s legal fund and the Montagues could use some financial assistance. You can help by donating online at:

Vendors Wanted

Typically all the tables at our gun shows are sold out. However, some of our older vendors are calling it a day and have stopped renting tables. We want to continue offering gun show attendees good value for their admission so we are seeking new vendors to fill those spaces. If you or anyone you know would like to be a vendor please call 905-685-4480 for more information.

Sell Your Stuff

Speaking of gun show vendors, we would like to remind our readers that anyone who has items to sell can rent tables at our show. You don’t need to be a regular vendor or in the shooting/hunting business.

If you have surplus guns, parts, extra reloading components or any other items around the house that you are not using why not rent a table at the gun show and convert them to cash.

Tables rentals are only $1/foot for members and $15 per table for non-members. The only conditions are that the majority of goods on the table must be shooting/hunting/firearm related and are legal.

Gun Show Location

Merritton Community Centre, 7 Park Ave., St. Catharines

If you want tables for the Sept. 9, 2011 show contact Gerry Gamble right away(905-685-4480). Shows usually sell out and often we do not have tables for all our vendors. If you want tables, call early!
