FEDERAL ELECTION IN 1996 A DISTINCT POSSIBILITY
Just a few days after introducing the new regulations regarding Bill C-68, Alan Rock quickly withdrew them. Why?? The general feeling is that the Liberals are entertaining thoughts of calling an early election to try and retain power before their popularity slips any further. With fiascos like lying about getting rid of the GST, botching of the Quebec situation and forcing through the unpopular gay rights bill, the last thing the Liberals need is to remind millions of Canadian gun owners about their unfair treatment just before an election. There is now even some talk that the new regulations will be stalled until 1997 by which time the Liberals hope they will have been re-elected for another term. Keep up the pressure on them and any time you are speaking or writing to a Liberal MP, remind them that you have not forgotten what they did to you as a law-abiding citizen and will be directing your vote elsewhere.
ONTARIO MAY CHALLENGE C-68
It is possible that the Province of Ontario will join Saskatchewan in a legal challenge to the constitutionality of Bill C-68. While it is a federal bill, the responsibility of enforcement and paying the subsequent costs of police time, etc. falls to the provinces. With the provincial Conservatives in a cost-cutting mode the last thing they need is to have to enforce a law that costs a lot of money and police resources without any accompanying benefits such as a decrease in crime. What can you do? Contact your local MP (especially if they are a Conservative) and urge them to press Solicitor-General Bob Runciman to join in this court challenge. Remember, if the police do not strictly enforce the law because they see it as a low priority the law becomes ineffective. Let your MP and MPP know that you have not forgotten C-68.
ANDY SWECK, HAMILTON BY-ELECTION
In June there is a by-election in Hamilton for the vacant seat left when Sheila Copps had to step down because she lied to her constituents about the Liberals scrapping the GST. The Reform candidate in the riding is Andy Sweck, who spoke at our rally in January 1995 and has been supportive of our position. Those of you who live in this Hamilton riding should seriously consider to supporting Andy in his bid for this seat. Anyone wishing to help in his campaign is welcome at his campaign office (1320 Barton St. E. at Kenilworth) at 10:00 am. any Saturday between now and the election.
While the Liberal government tries to portray firearms owners as a small minority of Canadians you couldn't tell by the number of people who turned out to our last gun show. Over 700 firearms enthusiasts showed up to browse through the 90+ tables hunting for bargains. Our next show with more tables and more exhibitors is scheduled for Friday, June 14, 1996 at the CAW Hall. Don't miss out!! See the enclosed flyer for details.
